Deciding between asphalt or concrete for your driveway?
We will Cover the following questions:
- Construction time
- Cost comparison
- Looks / Style
- Resistance to Dirt & Oil
When you are looking at getting a concrete driveway installed, it has to cure for a week before you can drive on it.
By comparison, an asphalt driveway can be used almost as soon as it’s laid. For most projects, it takes only one to two days to lay an asphalt driveway, too, including site prep. If we compare this to the time it takes to lay pavers or prepare a concrete driveway, the asphalt is the clear winner when it comes to construction time.
Asphalt driveways are definitely a cost-effective option. In particular, if you need to have a long driveway installed, asphalt will proof to be less expensive than concrete or stone pavers due to the ease of installation for asphalt driveways. In many cases, an asphalt driveway can be up to 50 per cent less expensive than it’s concrete counter-part.
What Material is more Durable?
An asphalt driveway can last up to 20-30 years. While concrete can last just as long or longer, it needs repairs more frequently. Generally speaking, concrete repairs will be more costly than asphalt repairs. It also depends on the use case, concrete may not be suitable for frequent traffic carrying heavy loads. This makes asphalt a better commercial option.
Asphalt is an oil-based material to start with and this means that oil leaks are not as easily visible. Concrete, on the other hand, is commonly used in bright colour variations, that will show the smallest oil leak on your otherwise glistening concrete driveway.
Which leads to the conclusion that your new concrete driveway will only look good until the first oil leak appears. Asphalt driveways will look better for a longer time and you can get stencil patterns and different colours for your asphalt driveway as well.
